Abatement This occurs where the value of a deceased person's estate is insufficient to pay all the legacies and debts and claims on the estate are reduced, usually on a pro rata basis.
Absolute interest Where property is owned without any conditions being applied to its ownership
Ademption This happens in circumstances where a gift is made in a Will but the gift cannot be put into effect because the subject of the gift either no longer exists or is no longer owned by the testator.
Administrator A person appointed to take charge of a deceased persons financial and property affairs (estate) where there is either no Will or no executor to carry out the deceased's wishes set out in the Will.
Affidavit A statement, sworn by a person who formally confirms, usually in front of a solicitor, notary, or officer of the court the truth of the statement. This is similar to an oath which is a statement which calls on God as a witness.
Appropriation The transfer of an asset to fulfil a legacy rather than transfer of the proceeds from its sale. Often this will be an item of property of equal or similar value instead of a sum of money.
Assent A legal document and process whereby land and/or buildings are transferred by the Personal Representative to a beneficiary or other person entitled.
